Pilbara Minerals is proud to share that we are supporting Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation (PCHF) with the delivery of their Metabolomics for Asthma Prediction (MAP) Study.
Our funding will be used to conduct a two-year program that aims to use metabolomics to determine if urine can be examined to identify whether children who wheeze as pre-schoolers will develop asthma later in life, while also gaining a better understanding of disease mechanisms.
In an Australian first, the non-invasive test is designed to accurately diagnose asthma and other respiratory diseases in children earlier, so they can be treated.
Early diagnosis and treatment are critical, with more children aged 0-4 hospitalised with a diagnosis of asthma than any other age group in Australia.
The study is led by the Head of Respiratory Health at Telethon Kids Institute, Professor André Schultz, and researchers from Perth Children’s Hospital and Edith Cowen University.
Across Western Australia, one in four children suffers from asthma, with a disproportionately high prevalence in Aboriginal communities and children.
Professor Schultz is also the Head of the Building Respiratory Equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health (BREATH) Team at Telethon Kids Institute and is passionate about improving the health trajectories of children, with a special focus on lung health in Indigenous Australian children.
We look forward to seeing the results of the Study and hope to make a positive impact on the respiratory health of Australian children.
